Iraq UN relief official visits looted facilities in Baghdad warns of risk

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq, Ramiro Lopes da Silva, visited a number of sites around the Iraqi capital this morning – including a food warehouse belonging to the World Food Programme (WFP), a power station and sewage treatment plant. The WFP warehouse and the power plant are under the protection of the coalition forces, which have put a stop to the looting of the facilities, according to a UN spokesman. Even so, technicians have their vehicles and equipment stolen when they go out to repair power lines. The situation at the Al Rustumia sewage plant is different, however, as it is not protected. Local staff told Mr. Lopes da Silva that looters were operating on a daily basis, compounding the damage caused by the fighting and rendering the plant inoperable. As a result, one million tons of raw sewage are discharged into the Tigris and Diyala Rivers every day. “You have bad water, you have children with diarrhoea, you have malnutrition,” Mr. Lopes da Silva told journalists, adding that he would bring up the issue of security for the plant with officials from the United States-run Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance (ORHA). “So we need to address first the security of this site and then we are prepared to re-engage in rehabilitating it.” Meanwhile in the north of Iraq, a team from the World Health Organization (WHO), along with local officials, delivered two trucks of medical aid worth $43,000 to the Mosul governorate. The shipment included medical supplies, drugs and laboratory items provided under the UN Oil-for-Food programme. read more

Facebooks Oculus facing 500 million bill in copyright case

Facebook’s Oculus facing $500 million bill in copyright case FILE – In this June 11, 2015, file photo, Oculus founder Palmer Luckey holds up the new Oculus Rift virtual reality headset for photographers following a news conference, in San Francisco. In a verdict reached Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, Facebook’s virtual-reality subsidiary and two of its founders, Luckey and Brendan Iribe, are facing a sobering reality after a jury hit them with a $500 million bill for infringing on the rights of a video-game maker. Oculus vowed to appeal the decision.Although ZeniMax isn’t a household name, the Rockville, Maryland, company has some powerful and famous connections. Its board includes President Donald Trump’s younger brother, Robert; CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves; Hall of Fame baseball player Cal Ripken Jr.; and blockbuster movie producer Jerry Bruckheimer. In addition, ZeniMax CEO Robert A. Altman is married to Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman in the 1970s TV series.“While we regret we had to litigate in order to vindicate our rights, it was necessary to take a stand against companies that engage in illegal activity in their desire to get control of new, valuable technology,” ZeniMax said in a statement.ZeniMax’s lawsuit revolved around a mind-numbing area of the law that typically doesn’t draw a lot of attention. But the case became higher profile last month when Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, one of the world’s richest men, came to testify.During his appearance, Zuckerberg denied that Oculus had stolen any of its technology from ZeniMax and revealed that buying Oculus cost Facebook more than just the initial $2 billion acquisition price. He said Facebook also agreed to pay $1 billion to retain and motivate Oculus workers. The ZeniMax case could further raise the cost of the Oculus acquisition. Oculus is on the hook for $300 million in damages. Iribe is responsible for $150 million, and Luckey is saddled with the remaining $50 million. In a statement, Oculus said it was pleased that the jury rejected allegations that it stole trade secrets from ZeniMax. The jury instead found violations of copyrights, trademark and contractual laws. Had Oculus lost on all the issues raised in ZeniMax’s allegations, it could have been slapped with $2 billion in damages.“Oculus products are built with Oculus technology,” the company said. “Our commitment to the long-term success of VR remains the same, and the entire team will continue the work they’ve done since day one.”__This story has been corrected to spell first name of Oculus co-founder to Brendan, not Brandon and correct the amount of damages owed by Oculus to $300 million instead of $250 million. read more

Football History on the side of the Buckeyes and Meyer following loss

OSU junior linebacker Chris Worley (35) quiets opposing fans after an interception in the first half during the Buckeyes game against the Wisconsin Badgers on Oct. 15. The Buckeyes won 30-23 in overtime. Credit: Alexa Mavrogianis | Photo EditorOhio State football has a combined five losses in the last five years. In the words of redshirt junior guard Billy Price, even though the team lost, it’s not like the world is ending.Five losses in as many years is an impressive mark by anyone’s standards, but at OSU there always seems to be a level of play that is expected week in and week out from fans. Either the team looks like they are the best in the nation, or it’s a down week. But history has a way of smiling upon the Scarlet and Gray following a week that leaves a bad taste in the mouth of fans. Since the turn of the century, the Buckeyes are 20-8 in games immediately following a loss. Under Meyer, OSU has gone 2-1 following losses, while he has a 18-5 mark following a loss in his collegiate coaching career. The ability of Meyer and his staff to correct issues in the wake of dropping a game is why he is considered one of the best coaches in the nation. A key part of the Buckeyes approach to handling losses is to not single players out for mistakes and belittle the team.“It’s not time to go dive into people,” Meyer said on Monday. “It’s time to correct issues.”It’s no secret how to turn the tide after a rough week: make the necessary adjustments, study harder and make that much more of an effort during practice. In the weeks leading up to the Penn State matchup, there appeared to be a few glaring issues on offense and defense for OSU that were not addressed. The passing game for the Buckeyes has struggled for three straight weeks, with redshirt junior J.T. Barrett struggling to hash out the proper timing with his wide receivers and scrambling for his life against the pass rush.Price said there is no question in his mind as to the ability of the players around him. He said Penn State was a slip-up that will be addressed and corrected.“I never like to say it was one thing in particular because that’s not what great teams do,” he said. “As a whole you must understand holistically what happened and how we didn’t execute at a high level. That’s how great teams move forward.”That simple philosophy of owning up to their mistakes and taking the loss with a grain of salt has led to a history of winning following losses. With a team like Northwestern coming, OSU has a chance to prove why it dropped just four spots in the AP poll. The Wildcats have a stellar offense, led by star junior running back Justin Jackson, but have more than a few issues on defense. It is a great opportunity for a bounce-back game for Meyer and the Buckeyes. His message for a possible 19th career win following a loss is simple.“You lose a game, you’re not a loser. If you lose a game, you accept it,” he said. “That’s the message to our players. We work so hard so that doesn’t happen. It happened; move on. Get ready for a very good team coming in here.” read more

5 things to watch for Ohio State football spring practice

2. Carlos Hyde is gone, but he’s not the only Buckeye who can run the ballAlthough Miller is set to play another season for OSU, there is no such thing for running back Carlos Hyde. One of OSU’s all-time most prolific running backs — sixth in career rushing yards in program history (3,198), seventh best single season total (1,521) and tied for third in most yards in a single game (246 against Illinois Nov. 16) — Hyde will be difficult to replace. The Buckeyes do return numerous backs from last season, perhaps none more poised to take over for Hyde than rising sophomore Ezekiel Elliott. Although rising senior Rod Smith and rising sophomore Warren Ball came into 2013 with more hype, it was Elliott who impressed the most during the season. Finishing the year fifth on the team in yards and second on the team in average yards per carry, Elliott likely has the inside track to the first team carries in 2014. But don’t count out the electric rising sophomore Dontre Wilson, who is likely to get more touches with a full offseason of workouts and time to bulk up under his belt. Then-redshirt-freshman quarterback Cardale Jones (12) avoids a defender during a game against Florida A&M Sept. 21 at Ohio Stadium. OSU won, 76-0.Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editor1. Braxton’s back, all right. But who will be his backup? The mood of Ohio State fans across the country changed Jan. 9 when rising senior quarterback Braxton Miller announced his decision to return to school after days of speculation. Although it remains unclear how close he was to actually leaving, his return still leaves some questions unanswered. Despite being the starting quarterback for each of the last three seasons, Miller has yet to get through a whole season without injury. If this trend continues — Miller is likely not going take a snap during spring practice — a young inexperienced quarterback will have to take the helm for OSU. Kenny Guiton is gone, and the only quarterback who has thrown a pass in college other than Miller is rising redshirt-sophomore Cardale Jones. Jones might have some competition for the No. 2 spot though with incoming freshman Stephen Collier and rising redshirt-freshman J.T. Barrett. An insight into the battle will likely be given when the team announces the starters for the Spring Game, although it likely won’t be until the start of the season that coach Urban Meyer makes his decision. 5. New faces, new philosophies on defensive side of the ballIt’s no secret the OSU defense was not what fans were accustomed to seeing, particularly at defending the pass — a ghastly 112th in the country while giving up 268 yards per game. Meyer certainly addressed the defensive issues on the recruiting trail, bringing in 11 defensive players. But he also did the same on the coaching staff, adding Larry Johnson as the defensive line coach in place of the departed Mike Vrabel and Chris Ash to coach the secondary after Everett Withers took a head coaching job at James Madison. Johnson and Ash have excellent track records at Penn State and Arkansas/Wisconsin, respectively, and it will be interesting to see how quickly their presence will be evident. Both are big-time recruiters, which Meyer loves, but both also bring to the table the intensity that was missing late last season in the losses to Michigan State and Clemson in the Big Ten Championship game and Orange Bowl. 3. A new brand of bulk to protect Braxton MillerIt cannot be overstated how important the Buckeye offensive line has been to OSU’s success. The experience of Jack Mewhort, Corey Linsley, Marcus Hall and Andrew Norwell was vital for OSU in Meyer’s first two seasons at the helm. But now all four of those players have finished their careers in Columbus, and the Buckeyes are looking to young players to fill, and create, the gaps. Rising junior Taylor Decker is the only returning starter from last season, although it is likely that rising redshirt-sophomore Pat Elflein, who in place of a suspended Marcus Hall, did enough to earn himself a spot in the starting lineup. That still leaves three open spots on the line with Decker moving to left tackle. Rising junior Jacoby Boren played a significant amount of the season opener when Linsley had to sit because of an injured foot. Rising senior Darryl Baldwin, rising junior Tommy Brown and rising sophomore Kyle Dodson were listed as backups last season and the 2014 class has five incoming freshmen who will all be battling it out for the remaining starting positions. 4. Without Ryan Shazier, what will the linebackers do?Meyer said Feb. 5 on National Signing Day the linebacker position is undergoing “an overhaul right now,” and is surely one to be under a microscope for the entirety of spring practice. Everyone knows who is gone — first-team All-American and Big Ten performer Ryan Shazier and his league-leading 143 tackles — but who is set to return? Rising senior Curtis Grant and rising junior Joshua Perry are the main two players who will have some experience from last season, but their experience is likely to be tested with the addition of four true freshmen. Led by the crown jewel of Meyer’s recruiting class Raekwon McMillan — who enrolled in January — the young blood will push for playing time. McMillan is the lone linebacker who enrolled early, but Meyer has said he has no plans to redshirt either McMillan or the other three — Kyle Berger, Dante Booker and Sam Hubbard — players who are looking to fill Shazier’s shoes. Surely to be a storyline throughout the season, spring ball will go a long way to determining who is next in line at the position. read more

Volunteers wanted to trial Please offer me a seat badges for public

first_imgTransport for London is looking for 1,000 volunteers to take part in a six-week trial of a new blue badge for commuters that says: ‘Please offer me a seat’.Similar to the ‘Baby on Board’ badges used by pregnant women, the new blue badges are intended to be worn by disabled passengers and those with hidden conditions, illnesses and injuries to alert fellow passengers of their need for a seat. The trial is due to begin on Monday 12 September. If successful, the badges will be made more widely available later this year.“Many of our customers, particularly disabled people and people with hidden conditions, tell us they struggle to get a seat when they need one,” says TfL. “We have developed a badge and card that we hope will help.“The trial will help us understand if the badge or card can help people access a seat, and understand the reactions of other customers.”James McNaught, a Londoner who created his own ‘Cancer on board’ badge while receiving cancer treatment, said: “I’m really pleased TfL is doing this trial. A badge and card could help make a real difference to the lives of people undergoing drug treatment or with longer term conditions or disabilities.“Getting a seat on transport when you need it can sometimes be really tricky, especially if the reason you need to sit down isn’t obvious to others. When I was undergoing radiotherapy for throat cancer, it meant I couldn’t talk to ask for a seat and the morphine I was taking made me appear drunk. It was a real struggle to get people to understand why I needed to sit down.”Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “We hope that these new blue badges can make a real difference to those who find it difficult to get a seat when they need one, particularly those with hidden disabilities.  •  London Underground: 150 fascinating Tube facts “Everyone who travels around London knows about the success of the Baby on Board badges. I want Londoners to embrace our new trial and help these blue badges become as instantly-recognisable, giving confidence to those wearing them on public transport across London.”Anyone interested in taking part in the trial should contact research agency 2CV by emailing tfltrial@2cv.com.center_img Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp?

Man fired for watching porn on work laptop sues and wins

first_imgGood news, technologically pornophiles! There’s a decent chance that you can download or stream filth on your work-issued laptop or phone without fear of losing your job!Well, at least without being compensated handsomely if you’re terminated and that’s the primary reason for being handed your pink slip. A former insurance manager in Australia recently sued his former employer for doing just that, and a commission ruled in his favor. This case involved more than just a casually-downloaded image or two or an inopportunely-timed stream that a co-worker just happened to see. This guy reportedly downloaded scads of porn on his phone and laptop, both of which were provided by his employer. He even stashed some original homemade content on there, and didn’t deny as much when questioned about it.According to him, he’d done nothing wrong. Anything that was on the devices wound up there outside of working hours, he claimed… some of it possibly even while walking around on the local streets, which is no surprise given that people in New York apparently felt no shame about publicly viewing porn on the city’s new Internet kiosks in broad daylight.Ultimately, it wasn’t even a question of whether he’d porn’d it up while he was supposed to be working. While his actions might have showed poor judgement, they didn’t warrant a firing. See, his employer apparently forgot to explicitly forbid employees from getting down and dirty with their devices.Because they forgot to have him sign a nice, clear acceptable use policy they were forced to compensate him for wrongful termination — to the tune of $10,000AUD. Talk about getting boned…last_img read more

Is generational change of ownership happening in Mukesh Ambanis Reliance Group

first_imgNita Ambani with Isha, Anant, Akash, and Mukesh.InstagramAsia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani has apparently launched his children, Isha and Akash, to the corporate high table through their glitzy weddings that were attended by the high and mighty from different parts of the world, media reports say. Mukesh and wife Nita have encouraged the two siblings to take an increasingly high-profile involvement in the group’s annual general meetings by addressing the shareholders and announcing new products and programmes. The 62-year-old Mukesh Ambani’s daughter, Isha, 27,  tied the knot with the scion of pharmaceutical giant Piramal group, Anand Piramal, in December last year in a glitzy extravaganza attended by global celebrities, including Hillary Clinton and KKR&Co’s Henry Kravis with the mood set by a high-voltage performance of Beyonce, a report in the Business Standard website shows. In March, Isha’s twin brother Akash wed Shloka Mehta of a business family at a ceremony attended by the likes of Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai and several top executives of lending majors. The siblings have been focusing on the Reliance Group’s retail and telecommunications businesses.Mukesh Ambani is ambitious about new areas like mobile phone-driven e-commerce and thinks the next-gen is in the best position to drive the modernisation of his business empire, the report says. The twins are associated with the futuristic Reliance Jio’s Giga Fiber project. Some see the recently announced deal with Saudi Aramco, selling a 20 per cent stake in the oil and chemicals business of Reliance Industries, helping the owner of world’s largest refinery to reduce the debt as a move aimed at cleaning up the finances ahead of a change of guard. The twins have a younger brother Anant Ambani, five years younger to them, is also being groomed for a corporate career. Nita Ambani with Mukesh, Rishi Kapoor, and Neetu Kapoor.InstagramThe $50-billion Reliance Group’s leadership baton is changing hands once again in an environment that is totally different from the times of inheritance of Mukesh and brother Anil. After jointly inheriting the business empire from their father Dhirubhai Ambani, the siblings had a public breakup that resulted in a compromise. Mukesh inherited the oil refining business while Anil inherited the new-age businesses including communications and finance. The beginnings of the third generation in the Ambani business dynasty cannot be more different from that of the patriarch Dhirubhai who had started out as a gas station attendant in Yemen. When the Reliance Group started out, the Indian industrial landscape dominated by the Tatas, Birls and their ilk was vastly different from the Licence Raj at the peak. The business environment in India is changing so fast that the future is beyond prediction. The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has proposed to improve the ease of doing the business rating of the country. The necessary regulatory changes could bring in the global competition to the doorsteps of Indian business houses, requiring them to be more agile and competitive.last_img read more

The walkout came in response to a New York Times report that several senior Google execs — including Android inventor Andy Rubin — were rewarded with large severance packages or promotions after they were accused of sexual misconduct. The changes were detailed by Google CEO Sundar Pichai in a memo to staff Thursday. In addition to making arbitration optional for individual sexual-harassment and sexual-assault claims, Google will consolidate its channels for reporting misconduct into one site with live support. It also will provide “extended counseling and career support” for employees making allegations of sexual misconduct, according to Pichai’s memo. Pichai also pledged that Google will provide “more granularity around sexual harassment investigations and outcomes.”Last week at NYT’s DealBook conference — while the Google walkout was taking place — Pichai acknowledged that “Moments like this show we don’t always get it right” and he vowed that the company would make additional changes. At the same time, he also tried to make the case that Google’s culture has changed under his leadership, saying, “To be very clear, these incidents are from a few years ago” and noted that Google fired 48 employees for sexual misconduct in the last two years and didn’t grant any of them severance.Read Pichai’s full memo to Google employees:Hi everyone,At Google we try hard to build a workplace that supports our employees and empowers them to do their best work. As CEO, I take this responsibility very seriously and I’m committed to making the changes we need to improve. Over the past few weeks Google’s leaders and I have heard your feedback and have been moved by the stories you’ve shared. We recognize that we have not always gotten everything right in the past and we are sincerely sorry for that. It’s clear we need to make some changes.Going forward, we will provide more transparency on how we handle concerns. We’ll give better support and care to the people who raise them. And we will double down on our commitment to be a representative, equitable, and respectful workplace.Today, we’re announcing a comprehensive action plan to make progress. It’s detailed here and I encourage everyone to read it. Here are some of the key changes:We will make arbitration optional for individual sexual harassment and sexual assault claims. Google has never required confidentiality in the arbitration process and arbitration still may be the best path for a number of reasons (e.g. personal privacy) but, we recognize that choice should be up to you.We will provide more granularity around sexual harassment investigations and outcomes at the company as part of our Investigations Report. We’re revamping the way we handle and look into your concerns in three ways: We’re overhauling our reporting channels by bringing them together on one dedicated site and including live support. We will enhance the processes we use to handle concerns—including the ability for Googlers to be accompanied by a support person. And we will offer extra care and resources for Googlers during and after the process. This includes extended counseling and career support. We will update and expand our mandatory sexual harassment training. From now on if you don’t complete your training, you’ll receive a one-rating dock in Perf [Google’s performance-review system].We will recommit to our company-wide OKR around diversity, equity and inclusion again in 2019, focused on improving representation—through hiring, progression and retention—and creating a more inclusive culture for everyone. Our Chief Diversity Officer will continue to provide monthly progress updates to me and my leadership team.I hope you’ll take the time to read the full range of actions we’re announcing today.Thank you all for the feedback you’ve shared with us. This is an area where we need to continually make progress and are committed to doing so. We often hear from Googlers that the best part of working here is other Googlers. Even in difficult times, we are encouraged by the commitment of our colleagues to create a better workplace. That’s come through very strongly over the past few weeks. Scientists embark on Mongolia icemaking experiment

first_img Mongolian Cabinet holds meeting in Gobi desert © 2011 PhysOrg.com Ulan Bator The Anglo-Mongolian engineering firm ECOS & EMI will recreate the natural ice-formation process by drilling bore holes into the ice that has started to form on the Tuul river. They are to repeatedly bore hole throughout the winter to grow the ice blocks. Engineers refer to these as “naleds.” They are thick slabs of ice that continue to expand for as long as there is enough water pressure to penetrate the surface. As the slabs melt in the summer, they will, according to the plan, reduce city temperatures and save on energy otherwise used on air conditioners. They will also help regulate irrigation supplies and drinking water.Mongolia is fitting for such an experiment, as a land of extremes. Its capital Ulan Bator is listed as the coldest capital city in the world yet has hot summers as well. The Ulan Bator government is funding the project at an estimated cost of over $700,000. If successful, the engineers believe the process can be applied to other cities facing similarly difficult climate conditions.Numerous aspects of environmental conditions need attention and there is reported to be a limited supply of safe water. Reports note that the river Tuul, which flows through Ulan Bator, is beset by pollution. Some observers point to pollution from gold mining as well as insufficient sanitation facilities to accommodate an influx of residents. A third of the population lives in the capital. Traditional nomadic lifestyles have been upset by forces of climate change and urbanization. Observers point to a difficult environmental history where former Communist regimes promoted quick industrial growth with insufficient environmental laws resulting in serious pollution, deforestation, overgrazing, and soil erosion.Nonetheless, some web blogs stared at the news report in disbelief that money could be spent on such an idea, suggesting it sounded wacky. Still, Mongolia-based scientists are confident the concept is sound. Robin Grayson, a geologist in Mongolia, said that naleds can be used to provide “cool parks” in cities. Grayson is the author of an earlier paper, “Asian Ice Shields and Climate Change” in which he says that protecting naleds would enable the mitigation of climate change across vast regions of Asia.
