Australia deports 100 Sri Lankans

The Sri Lankan men were advised of their status and that they were subject to removal from Australia. They raised no issues that engaged Australia’s international obligations.Without a valid visa they had no legal right to remain in Australia and were removed at the earliest opportunity. “This group of 100 people takes to 426 the number of Sri Lankans returned involuntarily since 13 August, as we continue to return people where they do not engage Australia’s international obligations. The message here is very clear: people who pay smugglers are risking their lives and throwing their money away. They are being told lies. There is no visa on arrival, there is no speedy outcome, and there is no special treatment.” “This latest removal was achieved with the cooperation of the Royal Australian Air Force who made a KC-30 aircraft available to enable a larger number of people to be removed at one time than was previously possible,” Mr Bowen said. “The Government is absolute in its resolve to implement the recommendations of the Expert Panel on Asylum Seekers to break the people smuggling trade, stop the flow of boats and prevent people from taking these dangerous boats to Australia,” Mr Bowen said.“We will continue to return people to Sri Lanka, we will continue to transfer people to Nauru, and now to Manus Island as well.”Since 13 August, 525 Sri Lankans have returned home – both voluntarily and involuntarily – as people realise that these smugglers only sell lies and false promises about what awaits people in Australia. A group of 100 Sri Lankan men had been sent home to Sri Lanka from Australia today, the ninth involuntary removal this month and the largest return to Colombo to date. The Australian Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Chris Bowen MP, said the Sri Lankan men were all recent arrivals from a number of different boats. Yesterday, the Australian Government also completed the first involuntary return of an Afghan man found not to be a refugee under Australia’s return agreement with Afghanistan. People returned involuntarily do not have access to reintegration assistance. read more

Sri Lanka UN refugee agency completes posttsunami shelterbuilding mission

Shortly after the tsunami hit the island nation, killing over 30,000 people and displacing nearly 800,000, the Sri Lankan Government asked the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to coordinated dozens of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to build the shelters, according to UNHCR spokesperson Jennifer Pagonis.“While the refugee agency is not normally involved in natural disasters, UNHCR accepted this short-term role because of the scale of the devastation, and because many of the tsunami-affected people were those also internally displaced due to the conflict,” Ms. Pagonis said. She added that the agency formally handed over responsibility for permanent shelter to the Sri Lankan government last Tuesday, 15 November. In addition, UNHCR’s own direct shelter programme of building 4,500 transitional shelter units in the northern district of Jaffna and the eastern district of Ampara is nearly completed, she announced. “Some 20,000 people have benefited from these shelters, with most residents happy with their new houses. Many have taken to painting them with bright colours to personalise their new homes,” she said.UNHCR is returning its focus to its pre-tsunami work of providing assistance to the approximately 341,000 people internally displaced by the civil conflict between the Government and the Tamil Tigers separatist group, as well as refugees returning from India, where some 68,000 Sri Lankan refugees remain. Under the UN Indian Ocean Tsunami Flash Appeal, UNHCR asked for $15.3 million for the operation in Sri Lanka, and was quickly fully funded. At the end of October 2005, slightly more than $6 million had been spent on shelters, protection-related activities such as registration, surveys, property rights issues, logistics and supplies such as tents and transport. The balance is expected to be carried over into 2006 to continue to provide assistance to tsunami and conflict-displaced people. UNHCR has been working in Sri Lanka for over 20 years. read more

US unemployment rate falls to 49year low of 37 percent

first_imgWASHINGTON — The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 3.7 percent in September — the lowest level since December 1969 — signaling how the longest streak of hiring on record has put millions of Americans back to work.Employers added just 134,000 jobs last month, the fewest in a year, the Labor Department said Friday. But that figure was likely depressed by the impact of Hurricane Florence. That storm struck North and South Carolina in mid-September and closed thousands of businesses. A category that includes restaurants, hotels and casinos lost jobs for the first time since last September, when Hurricane Harvey exerted a similar effect. In recent months, though, healthy consumer and business spending has been fueling brisk economic growth and emboldening employers to continue hiring. Americans are confident about the economic outlook, buoyed by the job gains and signs of higher pay. The September gain extended an 8 1/2 -year streak of monthly job growth. What’s more, the government on Friday revised sharply up its estimate of hiring for July and August by 87,000 jobs. So far this year, monthly job growth has averaged 208,000, up from a pace of 182,000 for all of last year.last_img read more

TCI NON PROFITS MUST REGISTER

first_img DR wants consulate office in TCI Related Items:governor peter beckingham, legislation, Non Profit Organizations Regulation, patrick pauline, register Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, 25 Nov 2014 – Legislation delayed by one year is now live; the Non Profit Organizations Regulation 2014 has been Gazetted and calls for all not for profit entities to register; which means they now become supervised by the Financial Services Commission. This legislative change was strongly resisted by NPOs, but now the move is forward as the law requires groups like Crime Stoppers, the Turks and Caicos Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Red Cross, the Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association, the Heart Foundation and others that fall into this category to not only state who they are, name executives, directors or trustees but to report on the monies being made, how they are being made and to show what the funds are being used to do. Greater transparency and accountability some might call it; for the Turks and Caicos as a UK overseas territory it is a part of the mandate to line up with global expectations about financial transactions within the territory. Ironically, as these organizations were seeking to have more time to brace themselves for this added expense and administrative procedure and hoping for the legislation to be tweaked; a Canadian attorney operating in the Turks and Caicos: Patrick Poulin was arrested in an undercover operation by US agents. Poulin and two others were accused of using a non-profit organization in the Turks and Caicos to launder money; $2 million dollars. Poulin, 41, who worked at Bishops here in Provo, entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to 14 months in prison and three years of supervised released in a Virginia courtroom last month, according to records from the US DOJ, aka the Department of Justice. All NPOs in the TCI are required to register, with an exemption going only to groups making less than $10,000 annually, who have less than $20,000 in assets and are with a certificate of exemption. On November 13th HE Peter Beckingham, the Governor signed this revised legislation into law; the three objectives being for non-profits to register, to maintain records and to annually report on finances of up to half a million dollars. There are fines for breaching the ordinance; they range from $30,000 to $50,000. MoT launches strategies to serve hospitality tourism sector with skilled manpower

first_imgEffectively servicing the Hospitality and Tourism Sector with skilled manpower is a pre-requisite for the actualisation of tourism-specific expectations. The Ministry of Tourism has put in place a two-pronged strategy in this regard – i) Institutionalising skill testing and certification, and ii) commissioning preservice skill development training programmes of short duration. The Ministry of Tourism has put in place a mechanism for skill testing and certification of the existing service providers. As of now, 45 institutes – IHMs (Institutes of Hotel management) and FCIs (Food Craft Institutes) – have the authority to test and certify in four hospitality trades namely food production, food and beverage service, bakery and housekeeping. The Ministry of Tourism had, in the year 2009, launched an initiative entitled ‘Hunar Se Rozgar Tak’, to impart, through short duration training courses, employable skills in certain hospitality trades. The total number of persons trained till the close of November 2015 is over 2,29,000. The initiative is meeting two important objectives – first, it is giving the sector the option of skilled hands at the lowest rung of service hierarchy, and second, it has grown into a strategy for poverty alleviation owing to its built-in, even if unsaid, pro-poor slant.last_img read more

Fed Survey Prime Loan Standards Mostly Unmoved

first_img May 5, 2014 525 Views A newly released survey of senior loan officers around the country finds credit standards remained largely the same on basic prime mortgage products over the latest quarter, while demand came in weaker.According to the Federal Reserve’s Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey, released Monday, 14.3 percent of bank respondents reported tightening their credit standards on prime residential mortgages “somewhat,” just slightly higher than the 12.9 percent that eased standards somewhat. The vast majority—72.9 percent—said standards “remained basically unchanged.”On the topic of subprime loans: On net, the handful of banks offering such products reported tightening, though more than half still said standards changed little.Even discounting normal seasonal variations, demand for all mortgage products—prime, subprime, and nontraditional—was reported as moderately to substantially weaker on net over the three-month period. Demand dropped most for prime residential loans, with a combined 42.9 percent of banks reporting less interest in mortgages compared to only 17.1 percent reporting more.Responses largely read the same for revolving home equity lines of credit: Among loan officers from 70 banks, 84.3 percent said credit standards have remained mostly the same, though among those who reported changes, a slight net majority said they have eased.Meanwhile, just more than half of respondents saw unchanged demand over the quarter, with slightly more seeing demand weaken (25.7 percent) rather than strengthen (20.0 percent). The Fed’s survey follows a report released last week by the Urban Institute in which researchers contend that lower credit scores have been a result of a change in market share, not a drop in standards.
