It especially undermines the exchange of ideas in Iran where for the past few years newspapers have played a major part.” Reporters Without Borders protested in May again a ban on articles discussing relations between Iran and the United States. Seven publications have been suspended in Iran so far this year. The country’s supreme spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the “Guide of the Islamic Revolution,” is on the Reporters Without Borders worldwide list of predators of press freedom. Ten journalists are currently imprisoned in Iran.Teheran’s Court 1410, known as “the press court,” ordered the suspension of Azad for publishing an article about the resignation of Ayatollah Taheri. The move came the day after the country’s Supreme National Security Council had forbidden the media from publishing anything either favourable or hostile to the ayatollah, hours after publication in the reformist press of an open letter from him which caused uproar amongst conservatives. In the letter, he announced his resignation in protest against what he called the “chaotic situation” in Iran, marked by “disappointment, unemployment, inflation, daily price rises, the gap between rich and poor, a sick economy, corrupt bureaucracy, bribery, embezzlement, growing drug use, official incompetence and weak political structures.”He accused those in power of using hardline thugs to enforce their rule and said “society’s dregs and fascists” were acting as “philosophers, sheriffs and judges.” Deputy culture minister Shahan Shahidi-Moadab, who confirmed Azad’s suspension, called on other publications to obey the censorship order. However, several conservative papers that criticised Taheri’s resignation were not suspended. The 12 July issue of the major reformist daily Nowruz (photo), which had intended to print such material, published censored articles.Mashallah Shamsolvaezin, spokesman for Iran’s Press Freedom Association, said the announcements of the Supreme National Security Council’s secretariat were “illegal.” The council, set up in 1989, is officially headed by President Mohamed Khatami, but its secretariat is controlled by a conservative cleric, Hassan Ruhani. Campaign demands University pay Oxford Living Wage

first_imgA wide range of student societies organised the campaign in tandem, including the Oxford Living Wage Campaign, Oxford Feminist Society, Oxford Migrants Society and Oxford Climate Justice Campaign. “The Oxford Living Wage campaign is determined to continually ramp up pressure on Oxford – the wealthiest university in the UK by endowment- as the movement gains further support.” The Oxford Living Wage is set at £10.02, already higher than the national real living wage of £8.21. In a statement made on the rally’s event page in advance of yesterday’s rally said: “Fair pay is essential to combat poverty— an individual in Oxford earning £9 an hour would only have £25.97 to spend on food each week. At the event student campaigners from St Anne’s discussed their expeiences in negotiating with college authorities, noting the typical ‘excuses’ deployed by bursars across Oxford. Councillor Martyn Rush said: “how ridiculous it was that an institution as wealthy as Oxford didn’t pay a wage sufficient to subsist in the city.” The City Council sets the wage at 95 per cent of the London Living Wage, which is calculated by the Living Wage Foundation. The Council is scheduled to increase the Oxford rate to £10.21 for 2020. According to a press release from Oxford Living Wage, the University does not pay all its staff this rate despite having the largest endowment of any UK university. Earning £308.3 million from its investments in the 2017-18 financial year, the university is the largest employer across Oxfordshire. A campaign spokesperson told Cherwell: “This action shows how important it is for the University and colleges to take action. The popularity of this cause among a wide range of those involved with the University and the wider city makes clear the University and colleges can no longer fly under the radar, and shirk their responsibility to pay a real living wage for Oxford, of £10.02ph. center_img This comes as part of a series of rallies and marches held by the Oxford Living Wage Campaign increase pressure on the University to raise pay for staff. “Actions like these serve to raise awareness in Oxford – among students and the wider community – of the University’s failings, and hopefully in time will lead to more colleges adopting the Oxford Living Wage, as Campion Hall among others have done.” “With this being a standard rate of pay at the University of Oxford and its colleges, we must demand more. If it’s not the Oxford Living Wage, it is a poverty wage. As living costs rise, the wage should too.” The spokesperson added: “Today, we have brought together a wide range of interested parties, uniting both Town and Gown in support of the Oxford Living Wage. We’ve shown our resolve to demand for change in the University and college’s pay policy and set out why it is so important. Students, workers and local campaigners gathered outside the Clarendon Building yesterday calling for the University to pay its staff the real living wage for Oxford. Only Blackfriars, Campion Hall and St Cross currently pay all their employees the Oxford Living Wage or above. Oxford University have been contacted for a comment.last_img read more

Five Years After Fukushima, Debate Over Nuclear Safety in Japan

first_imgFive Years After Fukushima, Debate Over Nuclear Safety in Japan FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享By Andrew Coffman Smith for SNL:Five years on from the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdowns and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is lauding progress in implementing post-Fukushima safety measures. A critical report, meanwhile, is accusing regulators of abdicating their watchdog responsibilities and plant operators of undermining safety.Speaking March 8, three days before the anniversary of the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi plant disaster, NRC Chairman Stephen Burns said America’s regulatory process rose to the challenge of ensuring “adequate protection” for U.S. nuclear plants from extreme “beyond-design” events by implementing industry-recommended new measures. “And now, at the anniversary, we find ourselves in a better place,” said Burns. “We are now rolling the Fukushima lessons into our day-to-day operations.”These post-Fukushima measures include building new earthquake and flood-proof bunkers and implementing the FLEX program of strategically placed portable equipment to quickly provide emergency cooling. Burns said these enhancements seek to put to rest those “what-ifs” that go way beyond the design basis and said the industry is on track to implementing them. The “bulk” of the work is to be completed at the end of 2016 and into 2017, he said. But that same FLEX program is at the heart of criticisms leveled at the NRC and the nuclear industry in a report by the Union of Concerned Scientists that accuses regulators of leaving regulatory-making decisions to the industry itself. In addition to questioning how effective FLEX would be in mitigating a total loss of power at a reactor to prevent a meltdown, the environmental advocacy group said the nuclear industry is attempting to ensure that the NRC’s standards for the program are “relatively cheap” to meet. The report charged further that the FLEX program “is being invoked as a broad rationale by the NRC to avoid taking further action to improve safety.”Full Article: 5 years after Fukushima: Fight over nuclear industry safety lives onlast_img read more

New pensions law goes into effect in Russia

first_imgRussia’s new pensions law came into effect on 1 January following its approval by the State Duma, Federation Council and president Vladimir Putin’s signing off in late December. All non-state pension funds (NSPFs) will have to convert from their current status as non-profit organisations to joint-stock companies – by the start of 2016 for those offering mandatory pensions and by 2019 for voluntary funds – and be licensed by the Bank of Russia, the central bank and the pensions regulator.Funds that fail to convert by the relevant deadline will be liquidated.Mandatory funds will require a minimum RUB150m (€3.3m) in own funds and share capital of RUB120m, rising to RUB200m and RUB150m, respectively, as of the start of 2020. The new companies will only be able to issue ordinary shares. They will be prohibited from issuing loans and, for the first five years of their existence, any dividends. The law bans offshore companies from holding shareholdings in the companies, a proscription that may in future be extended to foreign entities. No single entity or individual can hold more than 10% without prior approval from the Bank of Russia. The executive head of the new company would be expected to have a minimum two years’ relevant financial experience. As in the case of the previous system, the second pillar remains restricted to those born after 1967.Workers can chose whether to pay the 6% contribution to a privately managed fund or have the full 22% contribution in the first pillar – also the default option – with the deadline for this choice set for the end of 2015.Pension contributions for 2014 will in the meantime flow into the first pillar. The new law introduces a two-tier guarantee system. The first is a reserve fund that each company must build up from investment income and other assets, including the shareholders’ own funds.By 2018, a pension company’s reserve fund would have to be a minimum 1%, and a maximum 10%, of its pensions savings. The second level is a guarantee fund compensating members in the event of a pension company bankruptcy, to which the new companies must subscribe. This entity will be run by the Deposit Insurance Agency, the state body responsible for bank deposit insurance. The new pensions legislation also changes, as of the start of 2015, the coefficients for calculating first-pillar pensions payable on retirement, including making it more financially attractive for workers to defer their retirement.Crucially, it did not change the statutory retirement age, of 55 years for women and 60 years for men, which remains low by international standards. For more on pensions in Central and Eastern Europe, see the current issue of IPE magazine.last_img read more

Mahrez rejects AWOL claims on return to Leicester training

first_img0Shares0000Riyad Mahrez could make a dramatic return for Leicester City against Manchester City on Saturday after ending his self-imposed exile and returning to training © AFP/File / Ben STANSALLLONDON, United Kingdom, Feb 9 – Riyad Mahrez hit back at accusations he had gone AWOL since being denied a move to Manchester City after returning to training with Leicester, paving the way for a possible return for Saturday’s visit to City.Mahrez, 26, has missed two Premier League matches and had not trained with the team since the move he desperately wanted to runaway leaders City fell through due to Leicester’s demands on January 31, transfer deadline day. “Over the past 10 days many people claiming to be my friend have spoken about me and things they know nothing about,” Mahrez said in a statement carried by the Leicester Mercury.“Off the back of that many people and journalists have made assumptions without properly checking the story, so I would like to clarify that all those so-called assumptions of why I was absent are completely untrue.“Myself nor my advisors have ever made any statements about that so all presumptions made are totally without foundation. Leicester City were always aware of my whereabouts and had knowledge of my thinking either directly or via my advisors.”Leicester have struggled without their star midfielder, losing 2-1 at Everton before drawing with struggling Swansea City 1-1 at home last weekend.“Riyad Mahrez has today returned to training with the Leicester City squad,” Leicester said in a statement, whilst a video of a smiling Mahrez training was also posted on the club’s Twitter feed.“Riyad remains a greatly valued member of Claude Puel’s squad and is focused, together with his teammates, on achieving further success with Leicester City.”Mahrez’s sudden U-turn could see Puel provide him with the perfect platform with which to show City why they should maintain their interest when the transfer window reopens in the summer.“I want him to come back soon and play, because we enjoy watching him,” said City boss Pep Guardiola on the prospect of facing Mahrez.“I hope he’ll come back soon with Leicester and play at his level.”– Transfer request –The Paris-born player’s frustration is born out of Leicester’s astronomical demands for a player they signed for a reported £350,000 from French second division side Le Havre in 2014.Despite a second transfer request from Mahrez in eight months, Leicester reportedly held out for £80 million, with even City’s cash-rich Abu Dhabi owners apparently unwilling to go beyond a deal worth £50 million plus a player City valued at £15 million, believed to be 21-year-old winger Patrick Roberts who is currently on loan at Celtic.City had been forced into trying to find a quick fix when German winger Leroy Sane was ruled out for at least six weeks by ankle ligament damage, joining a growing injury list of attacking players.Adding to Mahrez’s anger is that other heroes of Leicester’s stunning title-winning triumph in 2015/16 — N’Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater — have been allowed to leave the club and join Chelsea with far less resistance. However, the club and player could come to a mutually beneficial agreement at the end of the season despite the tension arising from the recent stand-off.Leicester’s hand may finally be forced by the fact that Mahrez will have two years left on his contract, the point at which many clubs choose to cash in before the value of their prized assets start to depreciate.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more
