Juve ‘plot double swoop on Chelsea’

first_imgJuventus have again been linked with Chelsea duo Salomon Kalou and Raul Meireles. The Daily Mirror report that Juve sporting director Fabio Paratici watched them in action against Barcelona and was also at Stamford Bridge for Chelsea’s Champions League quarter-final win over Benfica.Meanwhile, Fulham boss Martin Jol is reportedly keen on Ipswich midfielder Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, while Leeds United have again been linked with a move for Paddy Kenny.Jol apparently wants JET.The Mirror suggest that Ipswich are hoping to cash-in on Emmanuel-Thomas and that Kenny is one of half-a-dozen players former QPR manager Neil Warnock is looking to take to Elland Road.Goalkeeper Kenny, who played under Warnock at Rangers, Sheffield United and Bury, has yet to be approached about an extension to his R’s contract, which expires next year. And The Daily Mail say QPR will hold a team meeting early next week before deciding whether to shake Chelsea skipper John Terry’s hand when the two sides play each other at Stamford Bridge.Terry faces criminal charges over allegations he racially abused defender Anton Ferdinand during a match at Loftus Road in October.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

SA boxing legend ‘Baby Jake’ passes away

first_img9 December 2013 Jacob “Baby Jake” Matlala, watched by former President Nelson Mandela and top Hollywood actor Will Smith, brought the curtain down on his 22-year professional boxing career on 3 March 2002 with a seventh-round stoppage win over Juan Herrera to retain his WBU junior flyweight title. It was a fitting end to an illustrious career that earned Matlala legendary status in South African boxing. His record, falling at one stage to 22 wins, one draw and seven losses, finished up at 52 victories, two draws and 12 losses. Along the way he collected the WBO flyweight, WBO junior flyweight, IBA junior flyweight and WBU junior flyweight titles, becoming the only South African boxer to win four world titles. Matlala passed away at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg on Saturday, 7 December 2013, at the age of 51. Shortest ever world champion The shortest ever world champion, Matlala began his career on February 2, 1980 with a fourth-round victory over Fraser Plaatjie in Port Elizabeth. A year later, Matlala had his second professional fight, which he lost. However, five fights later – four wins and a draw – Matlala landed the Transvaal junior flyweight title with a fifth-round technical knockout win over Simon Moema. It took him three more contests to become the South African junior flyweight champion. He successfully defended the title twice before suffering a 12th-round loss to Mveleli Luzipho in October 1983, dropping his record to 10 wins, one draw and two losses. The little man with the all-action style then claimed eight wins in succession, including his first victory over an overseas opponent. He next challenged Luzipho in a return match for the South African title, which ended in failure with another 12- round loss in November 1985.Not much taller than a Hobbit At 1.47 metres or 4 feet and 10 inches in height, “Baby Jake” is not much taller than the average Lord of the Rings hobbit. This, he once told Lucille Davie, writing for the City of Johannesburg, in an interview, was part of the reason why he quit boxing. He had run out of small people to fight. Matlala’s record was blotted when he suffered successive defeats to one fighter. In early 1996, he faced Vuyani Nene in Port Elizabeth and lost. After beating Pillay Duiker to retain the Transvaal junior flyweight title, Baby Jake again fought Nene, exactly one year after his loss to the Eastern Cape fighter, but this time for the South African title. Nene once more had the challenger’s number, stopping Matlala in the 11th round.Lost to Nene After a points victory over Kirk Morris, the diminutive Matlala took on Nene on 1 November, 1987, seven months after his unsuccessful challenge for the national title. He lasted the distance, but for the third time Nene outboxed him. Matlala subsequently racked up another three victories, including one over Daniel Ward, who later became the Commonwealth flyweight champion. These wins raised his record to 22 wins, one draw and six losses. Nene once again proved to be Matlala’s nemesis, though, defeating him on points for the South African title. At this stage of his career, in 1988, Matlala had lost seven fights, four of those to Nene. If Matlala was discouraged, he did not show it. The following year, in 1989, he again challenged for a South African title, this time as a flyweight. He came up short, however, losing on points to Jaji Sibali. He then registered a run of eight victories, including wins over two Mexican fighters and a successful outing against Wele Maqolo to lift the vacant South African junior flyweight title.World title crack After retaining his title against Ndoda Mayende, Matlala had his first crack at a world title in September 1991 when he took on Dave McCauley for the IBF flyweight title in Belfast. He failed in his attempt, suffering a 10th-round knockout at the hands of the Irishman. Three wins later, including a successful defence of his South African crown and a victory over Mexico’s Raul Acosta, Matlala challenged Pat Clinton for the WBO flyweight title in May 1993. In front of Clinton’s home town supporters in Glasgow, the South African boxer overwhelmed his opponent to capture his first world title on an eighth-round technical knockout. He added another four wins to his record, including three in title defences, before suffering his 10th career loss to Alberto Jiminez, who stopped him in the eighth round at Hammanskraal in February 1995. His next bout, three months later, ended in a draw against Liberia’s Sam Stewart.Two-time world champion Two fights later, Matlala was a world champion for the second time. In November 1995, he defeated Paul Weir on a technical decision in five rounds to secure the WBO junior flyweight title as Glasgow again proved to be his happy hunting ground. In early 1996, Matlala again took on Weir in Liverpool and retained his WBO crown. After a 12-round victory over Mickey Cantwell, he challenged Michael Carbajal for the IBA junior flyweight title. The experts argued that this would be the toughest fight of Baby Jake’s career, against a fighter regarded by many as the best pound- for-pound boxer in the world. Fighting in Las Vegas on 18 July 1997, before a large American television audience, Matlala delivered the best performance of his career, battering Carbajal for nine rounds before the referee stopped the fight, with the Mexican clearly a beaten man. That victory raised Matlala’s profile and stock considerably and, of course, earned him another world title.SA vs SA After a further four wins, including two title defences, Matlala relinquished the IBA title to face another South African, Hawk Makepula, in February 2000 for the vacant WBO junior flyweight title. It was a bout the South African boxing public had been clamouring for, but it ended in disappointment for Matlala, who lost on a controversial points decision. For the second time in his career he suffered two defeats in succession when his former sparring partner, Peter Culshaw, beat him on points for the WBU flyweight title in May of the same year. In February 2001, Matlala once more tasted world championship success, easily defeating Australia’s Todd Makelin in four rounds to claim the vacant WBU junior flyweight crown. In September, he retained the crown with a win in five rounds over Mickey Cantwell.Last fight Finally, Matlala drew the curtain on his career with the victory over Herrera, 11 years his junior. “Baby Jake” Matlala will be remembered as an all-action fighter who overcame his height and reach disadvantage by crowding his opponents and throwing a relentless barrage of punches. He will also be remembered for the fantastic condition that he kept himself in for his fights, right up to the age of 40. Above all, however, it was the little man’s big heart that captured the imagination of the South African public. Matlala always gave his best, earning the respect of opponents and spectators alike. Unsuccessful in so many attempts at winning South African titles, Baby Jake simply trained even harder, kept coming back – and suddenly started collecting world titles.last_img read more

After Effects Next: 10 Feature Refinements & Tweaks

first_imgImport AdditionsAfter Effects Next will offer support for DNxHD, Sony 4K and AVC-Intra 200 (Panasonic) footage.  RED .r3d Files now have more options in “Interpret Footage”.  Click “More Options” to bring up the Settings.Interpret Footage is the icon in the Project that looks like 2 audio cassettes (icon on the far left in this screenshot):You can choose REDcolor3 & Redgamma3, which is Red’s updated color science that gives you a better look without a lot of adjusting/tweaking.  Previously this required a separate download from Adobe Labs.Arri RAW files can now be adjusted in “Interpret Footage More Options” (image courtesy of Convergent Design). You can adjust color space, exposure index, white balance and tint:Layer SnappingPreviously you could snap an After Effects layer to guides, and align and distribute to arrange layers.  However, you couldn’t snap a layer to a layer. Now you can snap a layer to another layer (anchor point & center position to name a few), and snap items to any point on a mask path. To do this Command or Control click as you drag a layer or check the snapping box in the Tools panel. While dragging, 2 square outlines appear to show you where you are snapping to: Adobe Media Encoder ChangesAdobe Media Encoder is a separate application for encoding your video projects into a variety of codecs and file formats.  Encoder integrates with Premiere & After Effects.  Previously to use Media Encoder you added the After Effects Comps in Media Encoder. Now you have the ability in After Effects to send your compositions to Encoder via “Add to Adobe Media Encoder Queue”.DNxHD export has been added to Adobe Media Encoder and the “Match Source Settings” now apply to more formats.  This is more streamlined than in the past, as don’t have to enter a bunch of settings to get your exports to match your composition settings.New Output OptionsIn Previous Versions of After Effects audio output was set to ‘off’ by default. Because of this it was easy to accidentally not output audio. After Effects Next will output audio by default.  Additionally, you will have the options for sample rate, bit depth, and stereo or mono.Lastly, if you are working with OS 10.8, ProRes export is automatically supported without having to install the codecs (only available for Mac users).Although most of these are small additions to After Effects, it shows that Adobe is dedicated to the pro user and is integrating features to keep the app up to date and more powerful than ever. Dependencies – Collect FilesProject management isn’t sexy but it is important for any successful post production workflow. A variety of project management options in After Effects are now consolidated under “File > Dependencies”.  Added to this is the ability to find missing effects/fonts/footage. Check out these 10 time saving tips to look forward to in the Next version of Adobe After Effects!Adobe announced the Next version of After Effects at NAB 2013. There were some big new features announced as well as some smaller but welcome tweaks and refinements.  They haven’t announced a release date, but if you have a Creative Cloud membership you can download it when it becomes available.Let’s jump in and look at 10 helpful feature additions in After Effects NEXT that you can look forward to in your future AE projects!Refine Edge ToolAfter Effects’ new Refine Edge Tool is about as close as you can come to an “easy button” when doing rotoscoping or isolation work on part of a video. This is a big addition that is borrowed from the “Refine Edge” tool in Photoshop. You could previously paint with the Roto Brush in After Effects to select part of a video, but it didn’t handle semi-transparent edges well.Rotobrush Without Refine Edge:Rotobrush With Refine Edge:Click and hold on the Roto Brush tool (man with a paint brush icon) to reveal the “Refine Edge Tool”.  Then, paint over the edges with this tool creating partial transparency for areas of fine detail. After you paint with the “Refine Edge Tool”, you will see the X ray view in Layer panel (the blue and tan X icon in bottom left) showing you a black/white outline where you have painted. You can also set an edge transparency by tweaking “Base Refine Edge Radius”. Time Saving Right Click OptionsNow you can quickly see where a layer in a composition lives on your hard drive –  a welcome time saver.Previously you had to first “reveal layer source in Project” and then “reveal in Finder”.  This may seem like a small After Effects feature but if you do this 15-20 times a session it adds up.Close Other Timeline Panels is another big time saver. Right-click (or Control-click for Mac OS) on the tab of the Timeline panel and select “Close Other Timeline Panels”. Think of it as your own virtual maid to keep your timelines neat and tidy.Pixel Motion BlurThis AE tool fakes motion blur, which is handy for adding blur to rendered video and animations. Pixel Motion Blur isn’t a new feature, it’s just easier to access now.In my example I used it on a stock animation clip to enhance the blur when the bowling ball hits the pins. Previously you had to use a third party effect to do this like ReelSmart Motion Blur or Kronos. Retooled has a helpful video tutorial on After Effects Pixel Motion Blur here. With Pixel Motion Blur:Without Pixel Motion Blur:Bicubic ScalingIn After Effects Next you can choose between the new bicubic, and the previous bilinear, sampling for selected layers scaling and other transformations.Bicubic sampling is generally the best choice for photos, while Bilinear is usually the best for working with graphics. You can select these choices by right clicking on a layer or clicking in the “Quality and Sampling” box for the layer (highlighted in red in the screenshot below).Gradient RampI use Gradient Ramp in After Effects when creating backgrounds and making text more visually interesting.  This effect was previously called the Ramp effect and the name change makes sense as it is easier to find.Adobe has also added the ability to swap colors with one click!last_img read more

Dilico claims only three infants not four died on its watch but

first_img(Breanne LeClair holds her late son Kyler who died April 16, 2014 on a cluttered adult bed while in a kinship out of care agreement. Submitted photo.)Kenneth JacksonAPTN NewsDilico Anishinabek Family Care is demanding APTN News run corrections of a previously published story about the deaths of four babies saying incorrect information has defamed the agency. However, APTN is refusing to do so based on the facts that follow.Last June APTN published a story about four babies dying in care within seven months with one common theme: Dilico Anishinabek Family Care. The information came largely from court documents and coroner records.Prior to publication, APTN reached out to Dilico Executive Director Daria Borg with detailed questions about the deaths. No response was received.A day before APTN planned to publish the story it reached out to Dilico one more time. This time, a response came.“I would like to meet with you. Please contact me tomorrow to schedule a time that you could come visit Dilico in Thunder Bay,” Borg wrote.APTN agreed to the meeting but pushed for a more immediate response to its questions.“We are unable to comment or provide any further information beyond that which is publicly available, and already in your possession,” Borg responded. “Providing any further information would violate our legal obligations to protect the privacy of current and former employees, and of children in the care of our agency.”The story ran the following day, on June 13.On June 14 Borg emailed APTN saying there were inaccuracies in the story but that she couldn’t identify them due to confidentiality.APTN asked for clarification around any specific errors, but Borg refused to back up her claim.APTN considered the matter over.Last week a lawyer representing Dilico sent a letter to APTN accusing the network of defamation based on the June 13 article. In a recent feature article, Death as Expected: Inside a child welfare system where 102 Indigenous kids died in 5 years, APTN repeated the fact of four babies dying in seven months under the watch of Dilico between 2013 and 2014.“Dilico is at a loss to understand why, after having been alerted to the fact that your June 13, 2019 report contains numerous inaccuracies, you would continue to rely on uncorroborated, imprecise, and ill-informed accounts of facts in order to further defame Dilico,” wrote Katherine Hensel, on behalf of Dilico, at 12:21 a.m. Sept. 27.In June, Dilico did not particularize its claim about the alleged “numerous inaccuracies”. On Sept. 27, however, Hensel outlined what Dilico believed the mistakes to be.First, Dilico zeroed in on the term “in care,” which APTN used in the headline. It involves the death of Kyler LeClair in April 2014, when his father left the three-month-old infant alone on a cluttered adult bed for at least 30 minutes. The coroner couldn’t confirm a cause of death. Kyler was in what’s known as a kinship out of care agreement.Dilico was directly involved with Kyler’s placement by not allowing him to live with his mother, Breanne LeClair, who was living with her mother. The baby’s white father and the father’s mother signed the Kinship agreement. The mom kept pushing for custody; she received a letter from Dilico before Kyler’s death.“I am writing this letter to confirm that you are currently working cooperatively with Dilico Anishinabek Family Care on a service plan towards reunification with (Kyler),” wrote Mandi Merkley, the case manager on the file, on March 26, 2014.Kyler died on April 16, 2014.APTN has responded to Hensel’s letter saying that use of the term “in care” is justified as Dilico determined precisely where Kyler was living at the time of his death. The next paragraph in Hensel’s letter was much shorter: “Furthermore, your speculation in your reports about a ‘fourth’ unidentified infant who purportedly died in Dilico’s care is unfounded as there is no such child.”APTN responded to the lawyer, pointing out the unidentified baby comes from Dilico’s statement of defence in the wrongful dismissal case of former employee Lori Watts, filed in the Thunder Bay court in November 2014.“In or about April 2014, an infant died while at one of the Defendant’s foster homes under the Plaintiff’s supervision,” said Dilico, but didn’t include any further information on this death.APTN considered if this child could have been Kyler, as it is around the same time as the death mentioned by Dilico in the wrongful dismissal case. But Dilico used terms in that case like “foster homes” and “supervision” suggesting that was formal care.Using the argument Dilico is making over the definition of “in care” there had to have been a fourth baby, as foster care means “in care” according to Ontario law.But there is much more to this.APTN met with Borg Aug. 8, 2019 while in Thunder Bay interviewing mothers who had lost babies that had been taken by Dilico. While filming the Dilico building, which is the largest building in the Fort William First Nation, Borg came out to talk to APTN.She complimented APTN’s work and spoke of the issues they face trying to provide child welfare services.APTN asked if the “inaccuracies” in the previous story was the definition of “in care,” but Borg shook her head declining to comment. She instead spoke about her own past and the struggles Dilico deals with.APTN told Borg people in the community fear Dilico and, asked her to come on-camera.Borg said she would need to speak to her lawyer first.(Daniel Issac Sabastein Quedent died June 13, 2014 in a Thunder Bay foster home. The coroner found evidence of an unsafe sleeping environment but a pre-existing heart problem was later found to be the cause of the death. Submitted photo)Then on Aug. 29, 2019 APTN had a telephone conversation with Borg that was agreed to be off the record.Emails continued over the next several weeks.“Thank you for sharing this information,” Borg wrote on Sept. 11 after APTN provided some information that showed it had been underfunded by more than $167 million over six years compared to agencies in the south.“I will be seeking approval from our board to respond to you. I will follow up after our meeting next Thursday. Take care,” she continued. That was the last APTN heard from Borg or Dilico until the letter from Hensel. The other baby APTN has been able to identify was Talon Nelson who died in a cluttered crib while placed in a Thunder Bay foster home Oct. 29, 2013. He was three months old and the coroner ruled his death undetermined.APTN stands behind its [email protected]last_img read more

Through the good and the bad, the seniors have had to take active roles as leaders of the team. Outside hitter Ashley Wenz felt the weight on her shoulders Nov. 8 after the Buckeyes  swept Rutgers 3-0, and their star junior setter Taylor Hughes went down with an injury.“I looked around and there’s four freshmen and a sophomore and I’m like, ‘I’m the person that they look up to,’” Wenz said. “They made me really appreciate my role on the team.”Outside hitter Luisa Schirmer said she recognized the importance of the role she and her fellow seniors demonstrate this season, and how much they influence the younger players. With half of the roster consisting of freshmen and sophomores, Schirmer emphasized the importance of making the younger players feel comfortable on the team.“Leading them, I think, is the biggest thing we’ve wanted to do as a class of seniors, to leave a good legacy for our program,” Schirmer said. The Buckeyes have limped to the finish line this season, failing to put up the success they hoped to find when the season began. Despite the struggles, Wenz said she has seen improvement in the resolve of the team’s youth.“I think when the going gets tough, you also have to get more tough. It’s been amazing the things that our team has gone through, and the things that we’ve still been able to do with that,” Wenz said. “We need to finish out strong these last few games for sure, but looking back [at] what we’ve been through … it’s really remarkable to me, just our fight and our drive right now.”Ohio State head coach Geoff Carlston said he is proud of the seniors for stepping up to the challenge of dealing with a losing season, paving the way for the upcoming seniors and remaining underclassmen.“This has been the most challenging season of my coaching career, and I give them a lot of credit for the leaders that they’ve become this year,” he said. “They’re the leaders of this team, they’re going to be missed a lot. I’m glad to have been part of watching them develop and grow as leaders this year.”The seniors will play their final game Friday at home against Illinois. It’s their final moment to pass the torch to the returning players. After the season is finished, each of the women plan to move forward in separate directions. Schirmer is planning to graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering and hopes to play professional volleyball overseas.Senior defensive specialist Kalisha Goree will earn her degree in sport management and plans to enter the workforce once the season is over.Wenz will receive a degree in marketing. She is currently undecided between playing professional volleyball or going to graduate school. The Buckeyes will more than likely not play in the NCAA tournament for the first time in four seasons, which is adversity that Ohio State’s new group of leaders will have to work through. read more
